Who has the Right to Buy?
If you are a secure tenant and you satisfy the necessary qualification period, you will generally have the Right to Buy your home.
The qualification period is five years and can have been spent with any public sector landlord.
There are circumstances when you do not have the Right to Buy such as if you are an undischarged bankrupt or you are awaiting eviction. You may be able to include other members of your family who live with you.
The exceptions to the Right to Buy
The Right to Buy does not apply to sheltered housing and some other properties suitable for elderly or disabled persons. There are some other exceptions such as temporary or tied tenancies.
The procedure for claiming the Right to Buy
You can ask for a Right to Buy information pack from the Home Ownership Section by telephoning 01246 217670 or you can email us at righttobuy@rykneldhomes.org.uk. Click here to find out more information from the DirectGov website. Click here to download the Right to Buy application form. To download the 'Your Right to Buy Your Home' booklet and summary, click here.
When a completed form is received, we will check that you fulfil all the necessary qualifications. We will then send you a formal Notice advising you whether or not you have a Right to Buy. This will be within four weeks, unless we have to check tenancies with other landlords.
Repairs
When you make a Right to Buy application, any non-essential works to your home will be cancelled, but Rykneld Homes will still carry out essential structural or safety repairs. If you decide to withdraw your Right to Buy application you can report all repairs again.
Buying a Flat (Leasehold)
If you are purchasing a flat, there are some differences in the purchase and owning it afterwards. For further details, see our web page Leaseholder Services.
