About your rent
Once you have accepted a tenancy with the Council you will receive a letter confirming the amount of rent payable for your property plus charges for water and sewerage and where applicable other charges will be shown, for example, garage rent, heating charge, hardstanding charge to give the total amount due each week. A Rent Payment Card will be sent to you several days after your letter, which will enable you to pay your rent at any Post Office, PayZone outlet, Area Housing Office or One Stop Shop. Council Tax is not included as this is billed separately.
As a rule, your rent and other charges must be paid every week, one week in advance, unless you have an agreement to pay monthly. You are expected to pay the first week's rent at the time of signing for and accepting the tenancy.
Rent is normally collected during 48 weeks of the year, leaving 4 weeks where no rent is due. These "rent free" weeks are set for the last two weeks in December and March.
How will I be informed of changes to my rent?
If the Council decides to change the amount of your rent, or other charges, we will give you at least four weeks notice in writing of the changes.
Can I receive help towards paying my rent?
Housing Benefit is a rebate, providing help towards paying your rent for people on low income or State Benefits. If you think you may qualify, you need to fill in an application form that you can pick up from your local Area Housing Office. Please let your rent office know if you have applied for Housing Benefit. Click here to use the North East Derbyshire District Council Online Benefits Calculator which can estimate your benefit entitlement.
If you have applied for Housing Benefit or are already receiving it, it is important to respond to all requests for information and to promptly return forms sent to you. Delay on your part could lead to rent arrears building up unnecessarily.
