Six steps for dealing with debt:

1.   Speak to all the companies you are in debt to - they may be able to provide advice and work out a more manageable plan for you to repay them if you tell them about the difficulties you are having.
2. Work out how much money you have coming in and going out using a budget sheet, making sure you are able to pay at least the minimum payments for each debt.
3. Pay off your priority debts first - these are debts like rent or Council Tax which could lead to you losing your home or going to prison.
4. Plan how you are going to pay your less urgent debts, such as an overdraft or credit cards over a longer time period.
5. Maximise income - look into any benefits or tax credits you can claim.  Do not borrow more money to pay off your debts.
6. Minimise spending - see our money saving tips below.

Money Saving Tips

Whether you are trying to pay off debts of simply wanting to reduce the amount your spending, try these simple steps to save money.

  • Turn off lights whenever you leave a room and switch to energy-saving light bulbs - these last 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs.
  • Consider changing your energy supplier.  Visit www.switchwithwhich.co.uk or call 0800 533 031 for advice on whether you could save money with a different supplier.
  • Compare prices in different shops before making a big purchase.
  • Use public transport - it is much cheaper than filling you car up with petrol.
  • Write a shopping list before going to the supermarket.  This will stop you buying food that you don't need.
  • Make packed lunches for you and your family instead of buying meals at school, work or out and about.
  • Consider selling unwanted possessions on a website like www.ebay.co.uk
