In April 2018 Rykneld Homes worked in partnership with Eckington Town Team and Tesco to host a Kurling Tournament in Eckington!
Eckington Town Team originally approached Rykneld Homes and requested funding from our Neighbourhood Improvement Budget to be able to put on this event for the community, which Rykneld Homes was happy to provide as we've seen the benefits of the community coming together to play Kurling elsewhere in the district.
One of the attendees said, "Thank you so much for all the hard work you put in to making the first ever Eckington Kurling Tournament such a great success.
"It was a great morning and I'm sure everyone enjoyed the opportunity to take part, it was a great success thanks to your efforts encouraging the teams to come and take part. The result was good too and a well deserved triumph for Hasland and Grassmoor. A determined team."
'New age kurling' is just like the winter Olympic sport of curling, but without the ice! It can be played by people of all abilities on practically any indoor floor surface.
It's a very social sport, the rules are very simple and it's easy to play. It can be played either standing or while seated, using a special pushing stick for people with disabilities or mobility issues.
There were 9 teams who took part in total! With teams coming together from all over the district including Eckington, Killamarsh, Grassmoor, North Wingfield, Clay Cross and Holmgate. Teams consisted of up to four members, but for people who didn't have a full team we matched them into teams on the day.
There was a buffet provided and the top three teams took home prizes and medals! The overall winners were new-comers Grassmoor and Hasland who took home the trophy.
