Kenning Park Heritage Gala

Published on: 25/05/2017

The Neighbourhood Improvement Budget provided First Art with £500 worth of funding towards an outdoor gala event in Clay Cross!

The outdoor gala event was held at Kenning Park in Holmgate on Sunday 28th May and visitors had the chance to learn all about the heritage of Clay Cross, especially Sir George Kenning (who the park is named after).

Sir George Kenning grew up in Clay Cross and created a family business which went from a corner shop to a nationwide car dealership that employed around 2,000 people. Sir George Kenning gave back to the community by bequeathing Kenning Park, and this gala celebrated that heritage.

There was lots on offer including a local actor who told the story of Sir George, as well as local schools who did lots of research on him in the run up to the gala. There was also a short film about Sir George Kenning at a popup cinema at the park

Community Involvement Officer Jessica Popplewell said, “It’s great to support events like this through our Neighbourhood Improvement Budget which bring the community together to celebrate their heritage.”
