Be Safe this Christmas

Be Safe this Christmas

DATE PUBLISHED: 15/11/19

We work with Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service to help maintain high safety standards in our homes. The service has shared its top 12 tips for a safe and hazard free festive holiday and we've included them here:

1st Day of Christmas
Check that indoor and outdoor lights conform to the British Standard.

2nd Day of Christmas
Check the battery in your smoke alarm every week.

3rd Day of Christmas
Decorations can burn easily - don't attach them to lights or heaters.

4th Day of Christmas
Make sure your family and visitors know what to do in an emergency.

5th Day of Christmas
Never overload electrical sockets.

6th Day of Christmas
Most fires start in the kitchen. Never leave a cooker unattended.

7th Day of Christmas
If you have an open fire use a fireguard and do not store fuel next to the fire.

8th Day of Christmas
Take the time to check on elderly relatives or neighbours - make sure they are fire safe.

9th Day of Christmas
Make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished before going to bed.

10th Day of Christmas
Never place candles near your Christmas tree or furnishings and never leave burning candles unattended. Keep lit candles and matches away from children.

11th Day of Christmas
Always switch Christmas lights off and unplug them before going to bed.

12th Day of Christmas
If you are planning to celebrate with fireworks, store them in a metal box. Never go back to a lit firework and keep a bucket of water nearby.
