The Community Involvement Team at Rykneld Homes worked in partnership with the Healthy Futures Group to identify areas in the district that we thought would benefit from a Community Café, a place where locals can get together to play games and socialise.
We decided to trial the cafes in Stonebroom, Mickley, and Shirland. Shirland was a roaring success with around 30 people attending each café and has therefore been able to continue. The café meets on the first Wednesday of every month between 2pm – 4pm at the Shirland Village Hall.
We spoke to Sheila, Barbara, Carole, Joan, Betty, Doreen and Marie to find out what they get up to at the café!
"We’ve been coming since the cafe started which was in August 2018. We play bowls, kurling, darts, board games, bingo, quizzes and we have a raffle and food together!
"This is a really close community and it’s lovely getting together and interacting with each other, we have a nice laugh together here. There’s nothing else like this in the village and for a couple of hours every month it’s nice to come together, it would be great to have more people come along and get involved! We’re not old – we’re just recycled teenagers!"
